ONITSUKA TIGER SHOES

Born in 1949. The founder, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka had a goal to promote a healthy lifestyle and bring up a sound youth through the spirit of sport.

Throughout the 40s as basketball grew in popularity, most students were playing barefoot. Mr. Onitsuka knew that if he could perfect the basketball shoe - the most technically difficult to make - anything was possible.

After studying the High School basketball team in Kobe for six months and
listening to their needs, our first basketball shoe was born.
Mr. Onitsuka knew he could improve the first shoe’s performance, but how could he make a basketball shoe with superior grip? The answer stared back at him from his plate.  Born in 1949. Suckers on the octopus tentacle in his salad were the inspiration for the ground- breaking Suction Cup Sole. The prototype’s grip proved so strong that testers were sticking to the floor and falling over. It took many trials before the perfect sole with optimum grip and ultimate movement was produced.

It is in our heritage to follow Mr. Onitsuka’s example and take inspiration from everywhere. For instance, it was after studying the air-circulating workings of a motorcycle engine that he had the radical idea of putting holes in his long distance shoes, the MAGICRUNNER, to keep feet cool and comfortable.
We created the NIPPON 60 delegation shoe (delegation shoes are designed for Olympic teams to wear at official functions and ceremonies) for the 1960 Rome Olympics. It featured the classic rising sun motif.

In 1966, the ASICS stripe design that we still use to this day, was introduced for shoes being developed for the 1968 Olympic Games. Called ‘Mexico lines’, the stripe has become our trademark design.

We also introduced the revolutionary RUNSPARK DS SP, the epoch of track shoes. Where others had only fixed spikes, our RUNSPARK was the first track shoe to have interchangeable spikes, making it perfect for any track and all conditions.

Towards the end of the decade in 1967, we introduced our LIMBER LEATHER shoe to the world. The entire Japanese Olympic team wore it as delegation shoes at the Mexico games. The MEXICO 66 with ASICS stripes are based on the LIMBER LEATHER shoes.

Meanwhile, a small former American agency of Onitsuka, run by a man named Phil Knight began selling the CORTEZ shoe, which was based on our CORSAIR. Knight named his outlet NIKE.
The first Onitsuka Tiger apparel collection was created in 1975, when Kihachiro Onitsuka, was asked by the Japanese Olympic committee to supply the official clothing for the country

Dr. Martens Shoes And Boots...

The history of subculture is a chronicle of being different. Back in the 1950s, when the first generation of teenagers fired up a youth revolution, their goal was to look and behave differently to their parents. Previously, young people had been stylistic carbon copies of their elders. But with the advent of first-generation rock 'n' roll and also Teddy Boys, a generational schism cracked open that would never again be rendered shut.
On the surface, the Griggs family of Northampton in the English Midlands was seemingly a part of this reviled establishment. Making boots since 1901 in the heartland of British shoe-making, the family was successful, established, respected. Scratch the surface a little, however, and it's clear that the Griggs clan actually possessed certain characteristics that would in the future become essential identifiers of any self-respecting youth phenomenon: they were free thinkers and they were different.

"Once the genie had been let out of the bottle back in the 1960s, the vapours of Dr. Martens' rebellious spirit could not be contained and the boot seeped into every corner and crevice of youth culture."

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT CONVERSE ALL STAR

What is the oldest, most popular, and all time best selling basketball shoe of all time? (As a matter of fact, 60% of all Americans own or have owned at least one pair of these sneakers!) Well it is not the expensive Air Jordans that the Nike Corporation produces! Nor is it made by Fila, Reebok, New Balance, or Adidas. It is the Converse All Star "Chuck Taylor"!

It was in 1908 that the Converse Rubber Corporation opened for business. At first the company only made galoshes and other work related rubber shoes on a seasonal basis. But eventually the company decided it was more efficient to keep their work force employed year round, and began making athletic shoes. With the popularity of basketball, the Converse Corporation saw the need to develop a shoe that people could wear while playing basketball. After lots of research and development, the very first version of the All Star basketball shoe was produced in 1917. The All Star shoe originally came in natural brown colors with black trim. In the 1920s, Converse All Stars were made in all black canvas or leather versions. The All Star was to be the first mass produced basketball shoe in North America. It consisted of a very thick rubber sole, and a ankle covering canvas (or sometimes leather) upper. At first sales were slow. They would rapidly increase a few years later, thanks to Charles "Chuck" H. Taylor.

Charles H. Taylor was a basketball player for the Akron Firestones. He liked what he saw in the All Star shoe and saw its potential for the sport of baskteball As a matter of fact, he believed in the shoe so much that in 1921 he joined the Converse sales force, and later became the player/coach for the Converse All-Stars, the company's industrial league basketball. team. Throughout his career with Converse, Taylor traveled all across the United States hosting basketball clinics and promoting the All Star shoe. His personal salemanship plus clever marketing devices like the Converse Basketball Yearbooks put his imprint on the sport at all team levels. But the Converse Corporation also bestowed something else on him. Because he was so successful in promoting the All Star sneaker, as well as making important changes in the original All Star shoe, in 1932, his name "Chuck Taylor" was added to the ankle patch. Hence the "Chuck Taylor" All Star basketball shoe was born!
